100% Please note: The reviews below are more than 12 months old. Member Review by Danny SegmanSubmitted September, 2005 Have heard mixed reviews about this one and since we were dining out with a vegetarian, thought we would give Soul Mama a go.
From when you enter the decor is very warm, hip and welcoming. We seated quickly and then explained a little on the ordering process which basically involves the diner selecting the size tray they would like and then getting a little printed receipt to take up to the buffet. Very much like what you experience at camp, but at $16.50 for a serving of rice and 5 small mains, probably a lot more expensive. You can also select salads from your 5 dishes and these were most diappointing.
Overall the food quality, whilst tasty, was average in my opinion. The wine list extensive, but also expensive with my Asahi tap beer at $7. We shared desserts which were a mixed bag also, however the coffee was excellent.
Would I recommend Soul Mama? To be honest, probably yes if you are out on a first date and not sure how long you wanted it to last, but with the option of a quick get away, or if you are looking for a quick meal with mates, but avoid if anything more than this as it does not really lend itself to being able to sit around and chat with friends and is expensive for what you get. The bill was $93 for 3 of us, which was 1 entree, 3 mains, 2 dessets and drinks (mostly soft drinks). Member Review by MarilenaSubmitted June, 2005 The views of St Kilda beach from Soul Mama's terrace are simply amazing! The food is also pretty good. It is like a buffet; you choose the plate size and then you go to the counter and decide what you want to eat. The plates on offer will make it difficult for you to choose only 5 (for the large option), so if you are with a friend you might want to go for different dishes to try as many as possible. I went for the large portion (5 dishes) and I must say that I didn't manage to eat all of it. We went there on a Sunday, and there was live music as well, barely audible outside where we were sitting.
